Things I Amplify from the web

Blasphemy

A look at blasphemy - from the guy called Javier Krahe who showed people how to "cook a christ" to a Christ on a McDonalds logo!

Blasphemy can be Fun

Recently I commented on the surprising case of singer-songwriter Javier Krahe, who has been involved in a surreal trial for “attacking the religious sentiment” of viewers who in 2004 watched a fragment of a short film filmed in the 70´s caled “How to cook a Christ” .

blasphemy-is-fun

This is not the first time religious groups have tried to use Article 525 of the Penal Code to criminalize “attacks on religion.” In 2002, in Seville, the brotherhood of Christ’s Great Power filed a lawsuit against JCSS, the young author of a video game called “Killing Cofrade”, in which the player faced Catholic zombies who carried crosses and wore the habits of the easter Brotherhoods. Finally, the defendant apologized and was acquitted … Luckily, because he faced a potential penalty of one year in prison and nearly a fine of nearly eight thousand euros.

A even more explosive case was the situation that occurred at the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid in 2004, when two religious extremists stopped a performance of the play “Me cago en dios” ( A spanish expression which literally means “I shit on god” but is used like “For fuck´s sake” ) and attacked the director and lead actor, but thankfully, did not defacate on him.

Tina Modotti Exhibition in Vienna

The Muse Revisited: Tina Modotti

Museum Kunst Haus Wien in Vienna hosts a historical exhibition of the work of  Tina Modotti, noted Italian-American photographer. The exhibit runs from July 1 until 7 November. It will include her famous series “Women of Tehuantepec,” as well as studies of plants, pictures and rare photos.
Tina Modotti Exhibition Vienna
The path of Tina Modotti, who was born in 1896 in Udine, Italy, was filled with intrigue and suspense. She died in 1942 in Mexico, after having crossed the world to create art and to promote her radical political ideals. As a teenager she had immigrated to the United States with her family, and it was there she would meet Edward Weston. She was his model, assistant and lover for many years; perhaps part of the reason her work did not receive the attention it deserved for many years. Art critics dismissed her as just another muse. Today, we recognize that she was much more.Read more at www.only-apartments.com

Veláquez’s Painting of Las Meninas

Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez

las-meninas-painting-madrid

The Museo Nacional del Prado, to the delight of fans and admirers of ‘Las Meninas‘ (The Maids of Honour),  has prepared an exhibition which critically engages 4 distinct artistic epochs. With the aim of paying homage to the great master Diego Velázquez, works from the Aragonese Francisco Goya, Pablo Picasso and Richard Hamilton, are reunited because of their connection to the artist. In this exhibition we can find three of Goya´s artist’s proofs of his reinterpretations of las Meninas, ‘Las Meninas de Picasso’ in blue ink by the talented artist from Malaga, and the stamp by the same name by Richard Hamilton, a pioneer of pop art in the United Kingdom that drew heavily on the work of Cubist master.

In short, don’t miss this exhibition, which runs through July 4, 2010, thanks to an extension. There is much to see in so little time!

What is The Night of San Juan

The Night of San Juan in Barcelona

Amplifyd from www.only-apartments.com

The Night of San Juan

When I was younger, on the night of San Juan in France, I found it very boring. For me, it was nothing more than a crazy group of adults dressed up, dancing around a giant bonfire and drunkenly ambling in the street. Later on, when I discovered the night of June 23 Catalan style in Barcelona it was totally different, a magical and unforgettable time for both children and adults.

A Night for Witches and Wishes

This party is a gold-mine for photographers, as they can see how the beach morphs overnight. As the hours pass, the sand fills with people, who arrive with their dinners and kids. The beach begins to fill with young people who gather in bars or set up their own makeshift bars, complete with music, bonfires, alcohol and BBQ. Children come with their pockets full of firecrackers and light them until dawn.

People jump into the sea, dance in the sand and throw fireworks … And the next morning when city officials come to clean the scene of the crime, they not only find kilos of garbage, but also lovers baking in the sun …

Souvenirs, souvenirs …

Lovers or friends who participate in the festivities should comply with the Spanish traditions for good luck: As the flames burn higher, you should jump though the fire while making a wish, or write three wishes down on a paper which is then cast into the burning flames. Typically a cake called “coca” is eaten, it’s similar to a brioche, and filled with cream, candied fruit and pieces of butter.

A Short History of Oral Sex

ahem.....

Amplifyd from www.whattoseeinrome.com

Sometimes we believe that modern beings is that we have invented everything. Internet, twitter, filesharing, even oral sex or pornography. Of course, at least in the case of oral sex, um, we´re not responsible for it´s invention. Although human culture has passed through more or less permissive times, and it´s a bit creepy to think of our ancestors by doing such things, the history of oral sex is as old as sex. Even our fellow primates the bonobos do it!

history-of-oral-sex

If you travel to India, we can find an entire chapter of the Kama Sutra dedicated to art of the oral encounter, which in Sanskrit is called “auparishtaka.” That’s a mouthful! Don´t forget, the Kama Sutra dates back to the second century BC .

In ancient Rome, fellatio was an act which reflected rather complicated social mores, and was considered taboo depending in what context it was performed. Giving fellatio was considered a passive action so the obligation to perform it was used to control and punish subordinates, and infrequently as sexual practice between two equals. A man could require a woman or a man whose social class was lower to perform oral sex (in a sort of drop-and-give-me-20 sort of way) and it was not just a sexual act, but also a demonstration of his power.

Carrie Mae Weems Photography Exhibition

Carrie Mae Weems Exhibition in Seville

It is sometimes easy to think that contemporary art is an academic phenomenon, understood and accessible by very few people. However, there are contemporary artists, whose art encompass many disciplines and uses all the formal possibilities of the exhibition (as understood in an academic context): installations, video art, photography and printing, but also manage to maintain a political or anthropological commitment which allows them to have a great power over a wide range of viewers.

carrie-mae-weems-exhibition

The American artist Carrie Mae Weems falls into this category. Although she is known primarily as a photographer, during her career she has also used different materials and means of expression-media installation, performance and video. Her personal experiences, history, and folk and popular culture form the basis of her work, giving it a great emotional impact.

The Andalusian Centre of Contemporary Art will host an exhibition of her work from May 20 until September 19, 2010, which brings together examples of twenty of her series, over one hundred photographs of large and small format digital prints on fabric and wallpaper, audiovisual installations and videos, to give visitors a chance to familiarize themselves with her work.
